RAIN SHORTENS
SPEEDWAY 95 SUNDAY PROGRAM
Nine laps into the Super Street feature, a rain shower passed over
Speedway 95 Sunday afternoon, bringing the program to a halt due to wet
track conditions. The Super Street feature will be restarted from
scratch on Saturday night, June 6, when the speedway switches to
Saturday night racing for the remainder of the season. The Dysart’s
Late Model feature scheduled for Sunday will also be made up on the
Saturday night show. The Late Models will also go 50 laps in the
regularly scheduled series event on that night.
In racing action that was completed, Brent Fletcher of Old Town
won his first ever feature event in the Sport-Four division, and
promptly dedicated the win to his late brother, Allen Fletcher, who
lost his life in a racing accident at Unity Raceway several years ago.
Fletcher had a nice lead built up after starting from the pole, but had
to race for the win as Veazie’s Kyle Gallant, who recently made the
move up to the Sport-Fours from the Wednesday night Little Enduros,
challenged Fletcher for the top spot over the last five laps. Gallant
made a strong effort to overtake Fletcher on the last lap, but came up
a few inches short. Gallant finished in second, with Hampden’s David
Green, the division points leader, finishing in third. Ralph Allen of
Hermon and Gary Richards of Stetson rounded out the top five.
In Strictly Street action, Jordan Pearson of Glenburn won his
first feature of the season after starting in fifth spot, and passing
leader Shawn Hamel of Bangor on lap 4. Pearson went to the win
unchallenged from that point. Hamel finished the event in second,
holding off a hard charge from points leader Bradley Norris of
Ellsworth, who had to settle for a third place finish this week, after
winning the first two features of the season. Norris inherited the
third spot when Holden’s Travis Poulin fell from the race on lap 19 due
to mechanical problems. Shawn Hamel II finished in fourth with Melanie
Judkins taking a fifth place finish in her first outing of the season.
The New England Super Mini-Cup Racing League also visited the
speedway this week, and Frances Bernard of Howland won both the make up
feature from an earlier rain out, and the regularly scheduled feature
for the day. In the first race, Bernard finished ahead of Howland’s
Josh Ireland, Hebron’s Rich Hall, Hermon’s Gerry Phillips and Rachel
Bernard of Howland. In the second event, Bernard bested Gerry Phillips,
Josh Ireland, Rich Hall and Howland’s Fred Ireland, in that order.
Speedway 95’s Varney GMC Wacky Wednesday program begins on
Wednesday June 3 at 6:30, with the annual pretty car contest at 6:00.
Regular racing continues on Saturday June 6, with a 6:30 start time. A
penny pounce for children 8 years old and younger will precede the
racing action at 6:00.
