Although the March winds and snows are still blowing, Speedway 95 officials are busy preparing for the 2014 season, which is slated to begin on Saturday May 3 at 7:00 p.m. The annual Bangor Mall Stock Car Show will kick off the season the week-end of March 28, 29 and 30, and a practice day is scheduled for Saturday April 26 from 10:00 until 5:00 for all divisions.
We’re ready to go, with all the regular crew back”, said track owner Del Merritt. “Despite rumors to the contrary that always seem to spring up during the off season, the track is not being sold and the crew is back with us and ready to get the season going”, Merritt added. “I did receive an offer on the speedway a few weeks ago, which came out of the blue and was immediately rejected. Like any businessman with a good running business, I’ll always listen to any offers, but I’m not seeking them and have no plans to sell the speedway. I could have sold it a couple of years ago, but chose to keep it and have not changed my mind. I’m excited about the progress we’ve made with the speedway since I took over sole ownership, and am ready to go with another full season of Saturday and Wednesday night racing programs.”
“ We’re bringing back the Pro All Stars Series for a Sunday afternoon show in August of this year, and are still working on a couple of more shows to fill in with during the July break. We’ll still have our Wacky Wednesdays during the two weeks we’re not racing on Saturday nights, and we’ll come back with our regular Saturday racing program after the two week break in July with a big fireworks show and race until the first week-end in October, when we’ll again have the three day “Christmas in October” week-end to wrap up the season. Chuck (Speedway 95 promoter Chuck Hall) has been busy this winter, and most of our major sponsors are back with us, along with several new ones, so I’m proud to say that the Bangor area business community continues to support Speedway 95.”
“We’ve made a couple of minor changes to both the Saturday night and Wednesday night programs this year”, Merritt added. “ The Saturday night Bomber Division never took off as we hoped it would, so those cars will return to the Wednesday night program, leaving us four full divisions on the Saturday program. We’ve added a new twist to the Wednesday show which should bring some of the “Wacky” back into the “Wacky Wednesday” program, and we’re hoping it brings in more beginners who will eventually become regulars in one of our Saturday or Wednesday divisions. We’re running four divisions on Wednesdays with a slightly different format for the “enduros” this year, which should raise the excitement level for the fans. The Stars of Tomorrow and the pick up trucks will remain pretty much the same as they have been.”
Our Wednesday night season begins on June 18 with a test and tune night, with racing beginning on June 25 and running through August 27. We’ll have four divisions racing every Wednesday night in a two hour format, from 7:00 to 9:00. We’ve also moved the Saturday night start time back to 7:00 to allow people more time to get home from work, get a little supper then head out to the race track for a fun evening of racing. Our admission prices will remain the same as last year for both nights, with maybe a special price night or two thrown in to bring new fans out once we get under way.”
“I’m ready to get going” Merritt added. “As soon as the snow finally goes away, and the ground dried up, we’ll have people out there getting everything ready for opening day on May 3rd.”
